'A visit to France' was the title of our May meeting talk. Wendy Lovell kept us well entertained with her talk on a family trip to France to visit the grave of her uncle who fell in the First World War. Wendy's marvelously appealing and humorous speaking skills gave us a most pleasurable afternoon. She told us of her visit to Aubigny cemetery where her uncle is buried, and how this cemetery contains graves of various nationalities including both British and German.

Wendy's visit was close to Remembrance Sunday, and she told us the moving story of how she took off the poppy she was wearing and laid it on her uncle's grave.

Wendy also told us of her visit to the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge and the underground tunnels, explaining how small and cramped the tunnels would have been for the soldiers. Wendy and her travelling companions were privileged to take part in a poignant remembrance service held at Thiepval Memorial, the large arched memorial in the Somme, which lists the names of 72,098 men who died and have no known grave. Amidst this very moving subject Wendy had many fascinating little tales to tell of amusing things that happened during the trip.

You are most welcome to join us at Lode Chapel on the third Thursday of the month. Our next meeting will be on 15th July -Speaker Nicky Jackson (Milton Children's Hospice).
