The Swaffham Crier Online

The Moveable Feast

There's always something special about extending a welcome and hospitality to people you've never met and being the strangers on the receiving end of that kindness is doubly special. As relative newcomers to the area, this was our first taste of Swaffham Prior in action -and it tasted very good indeed.

We arrived out of the damp of the Autumn evening into the warm, cheerful welcome of the kitchen at Adventurer's Farm, where Janet Willmott had somehow magic-ed a delicious starter to serve 24 and a glass of chilled bubbles to go with it. Then it was off into the darkness, this time, for us, to the home of Catie and Peter Whitely for an exceptionally tasty main course washed down with good wine and good conversation. So convivial was it that we were almost late arriving at the final destination where Kate Child presided over a festival of puddings with a gentleness and warmth that made it impossible to feel like strangers any more.

If you're wondering about taking the plunge another year, then do. Community starts at home - or in this case in the several homes of all those kind enough to throw open their doors to welcome people in. Thank you to all involved for your excellent hospitality and for your culinary skill -hoping we can look forward to sales of the spin-off recipe collection...
