Letters to the Editors

Reach Lode Bridge

Dear Editors,

I was disappointed not to be able to point out the new Reach Lode bridge to our visiting German guests as we drove to Upware a few weeks back. This was because it was not visible from the nearest road across two fields and behind some scrubby trees and hedges. How does this square with the somewhat hysterical arguments prior to construction from those on the Parish Council and its reporter who opposed the bridge, that it would 'look huge in the landscape' ? Would they like to comment now - or would they rather it was blown up?

PS. Who's organising the celebratory Swaffham Prior walk to Wicken, then? You are. Eds

Lady Edith Anne Dawson/Douglas Pennant

Dear Editors,

I inherited as a child a number of personal articles that formerly belonged to Lady Edith Windham, of Dartrey Castle, Co. Monaghan, Ireland. I believe Lady Windham lived at Swaffham Prior before & after WWII with her husband Charles Ashe-Windham. She was previously known as Lady Edith Anne Dawson & Lady Edith Douglas-Pennant before moving to Swaffham Prior. I have some photographs of her at one of her mansions from the period she was living at Swaffham Prior, but I am unsure if this building is still standing.

I am trying to locate anyone who may have known her first hand, or may know exactly which property she lived at or even have photographs. She lived to a great old age in Ireland after the war, but as her Irish castle was torn down & all her estates sold, I cannot find much on her existence in Swaffham Prior, and so I guess I am trying to ascertain as much as I can about her; before people who may have known her, leave this world; for want of a better phrase.

I would be very grateful if some of your readers might be able to assist,

Ben Mc Cabe
