WI Notes
For our September meeting the speaker was Beulah Candappa, a teacher and
professional story teller. We first learned about her childhood, growing up in
Burma in a large family where the traditional entertainment in the evening - in
the absence of television or even radio - was story telling. Now many years
later Beulah had us all entranced by her stories, poetry, songs and folk law.
She also talked to us about the research in which she is involved at London
University Institute of Education on Functions of Traditional Narrative. Her
stories both for children and adults aim to build bridges of understanding
between different cultures. We felt very privileged to have met such a gifted
lady and shared in the pleasure she obviously gets from sharing her
experiences. We joined in the singing and also learned to say hello in many
different languages - including Russian and Japanese!
Our next meeting is on October 18th when our speaker is Anne Datson who is going to demonstrate how to paint on glass. This will also involve a hands on session - so bring along a glass or jam jar and a small soft brush if you have one and learn a new craft.
New members are always welcome to our friendly group or come as a guest (£3 per meeting).
