The Sinking Voter
In the present political position, it seems pertinent, (even impertinent), to reprise a verse last published in the Crier in the 1996 February issue. I have edited it slightly from that version
With British cars and aeroplanes, of oversea's design,
And Industry in general, in an ongoing decline;
With tens of thousands unemployed, and a future rather bleak;
I'm losing faith in the government - as I did last week.
With the British fishermen, allowed less and less to catch;
And foreign sailors selling fish, at a price ours cannot match
Forcing sailors in our fishing fleet slowly up the creek;
I'm losing faith in the government - as I did last week.
With tasteless foreign apples on greengrocers' racks,
And the one great British burden - excessive income tax.
With inventions being sold abroad, or allowed to leak;
I'm losing faith in the government - as I did last week.
With vital information on discs that are 'mislaid',
And banks losing our money on 'deals'they shouldn't have made. .
With immigration numbers at an-all time peak,
I'm losing faith in the government - as I did last week.
With the price of oil and its taxation, at an all time high
Which to run a car and heat the home, one is forced to buy.
With excuse after excuses given in politicians''devious speak',
I'm losing faith in the government - as I did last week.
Though if we had another lot, it could be the same
Except for another Opposition, apportioning the blame;
But if a government did right all the time, it would be UNIQUE!
I'm losing faith in the government - as I did last week.
