Spuds in Buckets 2009 - The Result
Despite fewer entries, competition was fiercer than ever for the 2009 Swaffham Prior Spuds in Buckets challenge.
Entrants had from the middle of March until the middle of September to work their green-fingered magic on the single spud provided to produce the heaviest yield possible in their regulation bucket. The afternoon of the judging was hot - but it wasn't just the weather that brought sweat to fevered brows. The judges worked hard lifting laden buckets, sifting secret-formula soil, extracting and weighing the crop of precious potatoes. Thank you John Norris, Linda Evans, Kate Childs and Mandy Kingsmill for helping with this process.
Overall, yields were higher this year; Anita Lang won the adult's prize with 3.114kg of potatoes and Helena Pumfrey triumphed in the children's category with a massive 3.262kg crop! Anita won a Sunday lunch hamper - with a chicken, bottle of wine and wonderful selection of organic vegetables, kindly donated by Doreen and Paul Robinson at Waterland Organics in Lode, and Helena was awarded a Saturday evening supper box filled with goodies for a sausage and mash celebration.
Grateful thanks to all who participated - enjoy your spuds, whether you won or not! By popular request we will be running this competition again next year, so there is plenty of time between now and March to persuade the experts to reveal just some of their winning ways!
