THE GREAT RED LION RESURGENCE! Oh, what a lot has happened since last edition. The terrible tough times previous incumbents Ian and June daily experienced are now explained - Churchill's were probably selling up all along - but now...
New and enthusiastic owners (Clear Pubs), and great new LandLady/Lords (CAMRA members, no less) Sue and Pete, who, among other things, have most generously upped our CROSSWORD prize, TWO free meals, for winner and partner.
Now of course it is a complete coincidence that nobody (not even Bob & Julie, albeit they were in Greece) could correctly finish the crossword this month save for James Matheson, which would happily entitle ME to a free Lion meal. These are quite delicious, so we're reliably informed.
The Crier crossword, being cryptic, is completely unique to Village Magazines, and has Loyal Fans and Moaning we-can't-do-it Minnies in equal proportion. I myself did have a go at it in the Red Lion. It's all a doddle when you know how, I explained. For example, 1 Across, now that's.. .. .um, oh well, never mind, 6 Down...ur, leave that for the moment...um, 10 Across, drat..... . A truly excellent crossword, and before we know it, it may not only be our correspondents who will be gallivanting off publishing the Guardian. Robin Scovil and Chris Carrington, take a bow!
The Great Cage Hill Soap Box Challenge did indeed take place, and you can read all about it in this issue. Congratulations Tim Doe and helpers, plus all the intrepid participators. A great idea so expertly executed, on no account to be missed when it takes place again and we will be entering our oil-free and consequently engine-free Audi, having successfully practiced all the way down Glen Coe...Don't Go There!
Much-loved Trevor the Postie is going, he will be sorely missed, and many apologies from the idling, slothful Eds who will probably not get this Crier out in time for his Going Away do Reach (yes, you'll see us out delivering leaflets for our sins..).
But now it is time for our HOLIDAYS!! We're off see you in October!
