That Man Again
IT IS WITH SOME TREPIDATION and some forbearance by the Editor that I raise this subject again. But it is with good reason. Mark Rylance is coming to Cambridge. He was Artistic Director of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre from 1995 to 2005, he put the theatre on the map, and he achieved a "popular audience"of great numbers for Shakespeare. According to the Guardian he became "the last of the great actor-managers, while running the theatre"and "acquired the mastery of the space [at the Globe] that no other actor can match."
So he is something special. Yet, in spite of having made Shakespeare and the Globe a "must"for visitors to London he does not believe the Bard wrote the plays.
He is coming to the Arts Theatre in Cambridge and appearing in his own play "I am Shakespeare"in which, from the many author candidates, he has selected William Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Earl of Oxford, and Mary Sidney to make their claims for being the author.
Sounds dull?!! Not a bit of it - Mark Rylance is the master of theatre, drama and humour. It will be worth seeing.
It plays from Monday 17 to Saturday 22 September and the only reason for mentioning this is because the subject has taken up space in the Crier and some people (though not all) are curious, and interested.
