A Winter thought on Nightcaps
UNTIL 1964 the Canon Laws of the Church of England, drawn up in 1603,
legislated on what headwear clergy were allowed to wear in bed. "Not a
coif or wrought nightcap, but only plain nightcaps of black silk, satin or
velvet." These detailed rules were set "not to attribute any holiness
or special worthiness to the said garments, but for decency, gravity and
order."
