The Swaffham Crier Online

WI Notes

The Swaffham Prior Village Hall was full to overflowing at the Group Meeting on Thursday, 16th October when members from Swaffham Bulbeck, Lode, Bottisham, Quy and Burwell joined us to hear a talk by Dr.Mary Archer.

Dr.Archer told us about her home at the Old Vicarage, Grantchester, and the various people who'd lived there. One of them was the poet Rupert Brooke who rented rooms in the house for 2 years before the First World War.

Illustrated with slides, Dr.Archer's talk then covered the life of Rupert Brooke and his famous poem entitled "The Old Vicarage, Grantchester" finishing with those immortal lines

"Stands the Church clock at ten to three?

And is there honey still for tea?"

At our monthly meeting on October 20th Ann Hawkins gave us a brief profile of "Weekenders" and then chose 5 of our members to model clothes from the autumn wardrobe. She chose well for the clothes suited the models perfectly. Several members decided to hold "at home's" where friends could try on and order any clothes they fancied. This proved to be a very popular evening.

Next month, on 17th November, J.A. Powys is coming to talk to us on "Tiffany Glass".
